Description

Forge Close and the adjoining premises are two houses dating from the mid to late 16th century and the 18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. They feature timber frames that are plastered, and the roofs are pantiled with thatch on the later addition. The main range consists of three cells, with an additional two-cell 'unit house' added to the rear right, forming an L shape in plan.

The buildings are all one storey with an attic. There are steps leading up to a lobby entrance located to the right of the center, which features a recessed six-panelled door with a lugged architrave and a hoodboard. Flanking this entrance are 20th-century three-light glazing bar casements, with two lights on the left side for the service end. The eaves are supported by 19th-century shaped brackets, and there are three-light gabled dormers for the hall and parlour chambers. A cruciform ridge stack is positioned to the right of the center, between the hall and parlour, with a rebuilt cap. The gable end has bracketed pent ice boards in the attic, revealing exposed purlins.

At the rear, there is a boarded door in a cross entry position and a two-light gabled dormer. The 'unit house' at the rear, known as Forge Close, has an outer central boarded door, flanked by two-light glazing bar casements and two-light bargeboarded gabled dormers. An external stack is located at the rear gable end, with exposed plates and purlins, and there is a boarded lean-to outshut. The inner return features a rendered stack towards the front, which was enlarged in the 20th century, and a pantiled brick lean-to outshut that was extended to the rear in the 20th century. The interior has not been inspected.
