Description

Ampners is a house, which has also served as two dwellings, with probable origins in the 16th century and extensions made in the mid to late 17th century. It was partially raised and altered in the 19th century and underwent further changes in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is plastered, with pantiled roofs. It consists of a low two-cell range that was raised to two storeys in the 19th century, with a 17th-century parlour bay added in series. The structure has two storeys and an attic, with a 20th-century gabled porch to the right of the early range. The windows include 19th and 20th-century glazing bar casements, some of which have Gothic lights. There is a 19th-century internal end stack to the right and a lean-to outshut from the parlour bay that blocks the original lobby entrance, with an axial ridge stack towards the earlier bays. The left gable end features two and three-light 20th-century Gothic glazing bar casements with 19th-century timber hoodmoulds. Inside, there is an exposed double ovolo moulded tie beam, a pentice board in the attic, exposed plates, and a steeply pitched roof with wavy bargeboards. The rear has similar casements and an entrance in the centre of the early range, which includes a partially raised six-panelled door. The interior also showcases an unusual king post roof in the parlour bay, where four convergent principal rafters meet at the ridge with a plain king post on diagonally crossed collars, while the framing elsewhere is largely concealed.
