Description
No 24 on Fore Street is a notable 17th-century timber-framed and plastered building, designed in a style similar to the Ancient House in Butter Market, though it is more modest in appearance. The building has two storeys, attics, and cellars. The attic features three large jettied gables, which are illuminated by mullioned and transomed windows that have lattice leaded lights, with a semi-circular arch in the center light. The first storey jetties out across the entire front and includes panelled pargetting, along with three rounded bay windows that project above the ground storey. These bay windows are also mullioned and transomed, featuring glazing bars and a semi-circular arch in the center light of the south end window. The ground storey is faced with 18th-century brick, which is now painted. It has three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars set in plain reveals, accompanied by boarded shutters. The entrance consists of a six-panel door with a plain rectangular fanlight, and there is a 20th-century shop window that is now part of the adjoining shop. The roof is tiled. Nos 24 to 28 form a group with Nos 31 to 43.
