Description
54-58 Fore Street is an early 19th-century building with a brick front that conceals an older structure. It stands three storeys high and features a three-window arrangement of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars set in plain reveals. The outer windows are three-light. There is a brick band between the first and second storeys, and the ground storey has a late 19th-century shop front beneath a cornice. The roof is flat-pitched and covered with slate.
Inside, the first floor boasts enriched plaster ceilings that are comparable to those found in the Three Cups Hotel in Harwich. One ceiling is designed as a compartmented structure with plaster embellishments depicting foliage trails and shaped angular panels surrounding a central square with a boss, along with flower bunches in the panels. The other ceiling features an oval central panel adorned with a Tudor rose and fleur-de-lys. These ceilings likely date from the late 16th or early 17th century.
