Description
Burkitt House, located at 30 Chapel Street, is a 18th-century building with ownership records dating back to 1710. The initials and date "PL, LL, CL 1792" likely refer to the Lathbury family and indicate later additions and alterations. In the garden, there is a lead pump, now used as an ornament, featuring a panel with the initials and date "1731, IH."
The house is two stories with an attic and has a gable end window. It is constructed of red brick, with the center section breaking forward. The roof is tiled, and there is a wood bracket cornice and a plinth. The façade includes two sash windows with glazing bars and flush frames, along with three blank panels, one of which is arched. The ground floor features three-light sashes, and while there are shutter recesses for the ground floor windows, the shutters are missing.
The front door is set in an arched recess and consists of an eight-panel semi-circular headed door, surrounded by a semi-circular arrangement of fixed lights with radial bars, and the upper panels are diagonally fielded. At the rear, there is an earlier timber-framed wing with leaded windows. Inside, there is one panelled room that includes arched niches and fitted drawers made of mahogany.
