Description
The stable and coach house block, located 30 metres southwest of Playford Hall, dates from the late 16th century and underwent remodelling in the 19th century. On the left side is a two-storey coach house, while the right side features garaging with staff accommodation above. At the rear, there is a wing providing additional accommodation, with lean-to stabling added around 1800. The building is constructed of red brick, with the original work in English bond. The south end has a crow-stepped parapet gable, and similar gables at the north and west ends were rebuilt in the 19th century, featuring moulded terracotta copings. The roofs are covered with plain tiles and have 19th-century red brick chimneys. Most windows are 19th-century sash types with segmental arched heads. The south gable displays altered original mullioned windows, plastered to resemble stone dressings. There are various 19th-century boarded doors. The rear wing includes 19th-century mullioned and transomed windows that match the 16th-century work. The roof features 16th-century wind-braced clasped-purlins. In the lean-to stable at the rear, there is a section of wall-plate richly carved with a trailing-leaf design from around 1600, likely taken from the demolished hall range of Playford Hall. Additionally, a late 16th-century length of brick garden wall extends southwards from the southeast corner, interrupted by a gateway and repaired in the 18th century.
