Description
The Fountain Inn is a public house that dates back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the early 17th century, 19th century, and 20th century. It has a three-cell lobby-entrance plan and stands two storeys tall. The building is timber-framed, with the front wall encased in red brick from the 19th century, while the other walls are rough-cast. It features a plain-tiled roof with an internal chimney made of red brick. The late 19th-century sash windows have segmental arched heads, and some of the sashes include small panes. The entrance door is a partly-glazed, two-panelled door from the 20th century. Inside, the parlour to the right, now known as the Lounge Bar, has a plaster ceiling that is richly decorated with 17th-century motifs including roses, fleurs-de-lys, and thistles; this decorative work continues into the 20th-century single-storey extension at the rear, where it is likely reset. The framing in the public bar is fully exposed and appears to be earlier in style, possibly indicating a 16th-century core.
