Description
The Martello Tower adjacent to Rose Cottage is a defensive tower built between 1810 and 1812, attributed to Colonel Twiss and Captain Ford. It is constructed of rendered brick with ashlar dressings and stands three storeys tall. The tower has a tear-drop-shaped plan, with the sharper end facing east towards the sea. The walls are battered, and at the first floor level, there are four window openings with cambered heads, each featuring slightly projecting ashlar surrounds with lugs at the top, center, and bottom of each side. Also at this level, facing west, is a doorway with an ashlar surround and an inset ashlar ladder-slope below the sill. Above the parapet, there is a 20th-century glazed porch with a single-pitched roof made of timber and glass. Rose Cottage, located nearby, is not a listed building.
