Description

TM 03 NW 3/10000

HIGHAM UPPER STREET (north side) Byways

GV II

House, C15 or C16 timber framing; altered in the C17. Plastered with plain tile roof to 2- storey, gable facing block; slate roof to single storey rear extension. 2-storey block of two bays, with thick, closely-spaced joists running axially; joists to south bay cut away, suggesting a stair. The corners of the joists are roughly cut away. The size of floor joists and their axial arrangement suggest that this structure is the only surviving cross wing of a hall house. The lack of refinement in the joists suggests it may have been the lower end kitchen in rear wing heated by brick stack; bread oven and hot water boiler to kitchen. Upper floor and roof altered in C17. On the left return near the rear corner, ground- and first floor windows with some C18 woodwork. External stack to right of entrance on left return.
