Description
Hynards Cottage is a house dating from the mid to late 15th century, with alterations from the 16th century and a 20th-century replacement section. Originally a 3-cell plan, it formerly contained an open hall. The house is timber-framed and rendered, with remnants of old pargeting and some 20th-century pargeting. The northern third is of whitewashed brick. It has a thatched roof with decorative ridge detailing and half-hipped ends. An internal chimney stack, with a plain red brick shaft, was inserted below the ridge, and a later external stack was added at the south end. The timber-framed sections contain small-paned casement windows; the brick end features casements with a single bar to the lights, set in deep reveals with segmental arches to the ground floor, and a 20th-century plank door. The southern part contains 2½ bays of 15th-century framing, consisting of a parlour and one bay of the former hall. The parlour features plain, unchamfered joists set flat, and a blocked stair trap. In the hall, original main posts and parts of the solid arched braces of the open truss remain visible on the ground floor, although the upper structure has been removed. In the 16th century, additional posts with a wide chamfer and pyramid stops were added to carry the inserted ceiling beam, along with plain, heavy joists. A blocked doorway indicates the former location of a cross-entry, which was blocked by the inserted chimney stack that initially served a single hearth for the hall. The brick end, constructed in 1948, replaces the former service rooms and resembles an Edwardian style. The building was once a farmhouse.
