Description

The gateway to St Gregory's College, built in 1692 and now part of a modern workhouse, is located on the west side of the churchyard. This later Perpendicular style structure is made of red brick and features an embattled head, a straight arch, and carved spandrels. Above the archway is an escutcheon displaying the Arms of Archbishop Simon of Sudbury. Much of the gateway has been rebuilt or restored. The college itself was founded in 1374, and in the early 18th century, it was sold to the court of Guardians for use as a workhouse. By 1836, the last remnants of the old building were demolished.
