Description
Gissing War Memorial is located next to the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, which is a Grade I-listed building, on the east side of Lower Street. The memorial is prominently placed in a kerbed and railed enclosure that is raised above the road level. It is made of granite and features a rough-hewn wheel-head cross. The front of the cross is decorated with a reversed sword carved in low relief. The cross is set on a tapering plinth and a single-stepped base, which stands on a two-stage paved base.
The plinth has inscriptions in leaded lettering. On the front face of the cross shaft, below the carved sword, the dedication reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD." This continues on the front face of the plinth with "AND IN MEMORY OF GISSING MEN FALLEN IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918" followed by nine names. On the riser of the step below, there is a later inscription that reads "ALSO THOSE WHO FELL IN THE 1939 – 1945 WAR" followed by two names.
