Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade I listed building with late 13th century fabric that was refashioned in the early 16th century. It is constructed of flint, partly rendered, and features a nave with an impressive clerestory that includes flushwork panelling and eight Perpendicular windows. The church has north and south aisles, and the chancel dates back to the late 13th century. The west tower is notable for its polygonal stair turret, flushwork panelling at the base, diagonal buttresses, and an embattled parapet adorned with pinnacles. The west window is decorated with carved shields in the spandrels and is flanked by niches. A bellcote is situated on the east gable of the nave, and there is a south porch.
Inside, the church boasts a four-bay Decorated arcade supported by octagonal piers and double-chamfered arches. The roof is an early 16th century hammerbeam design. Other interior features include an octagonal font, an early Jacobean pulpit with strapwork, benches from the mid to late 16th century, and box pews. The east window contains some early stained glass.
