Description

Hingham War Memorial is a First World War memorial with additions for the Second World War, located in an enclosed garden next to the roadside and adjacent to the churchyard. It is situated to the west of the tower of the Church of St Andrew, which is Grade I-listed, and is close to the Grade II-listed buildings, the Manor House and the garden wall and gates of the former rectory.

The memorial is made of grey granite and features a Celtic wheel-head cross on a tall shaft with a moulded foot. The cross-head is intricately carved in relief with an interlace Celtic design on the west face, topped with a gabled cap on the upward arm of the cross. The words "FOR GOD AND KING" are carved in relief on the wheel. The shaft rises from a narrow, rectangular plinth with a splayed foot, all resting on a two-stepped, paved base. The inscriptions are located on the plinth, with the names of the fallen listed on the cross shaft; all lettering is incised and painted black.

On the west face of the plinth, the inscription reads, "IN MEMORY OF THE HINGHAM MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919," with the names of the 40 men who died in the First World War listed above on the shaft. The east face bears the inscription for the Second World War, stating, "IN MEMORY OF THE HINGHAM MEN WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945," with the names of the seven men who died in the Second World War listed above in an inset panel on the shaft.

The north face of the plinth features the words, "YE THAT LIVE ON MID ENGLISH PASTURES GREEN REMEMBER US AND THINK WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN," while the south face bears the inscription, "THEIR BODIES ARE BURIED IN PEACE BUT THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE."
