Description

  1. 5321 DENTON DENTON HILL Grotto in garden of and to west of Denton House TM 28 NE 16/7 7.12.59

II

  1. Dated 1770. Small grotto in garden of Denton House. Flint front wall with stone dressings. This facade has low pedimented gable with large flanking turrets and 3 pointed arches with key blocks. Inside: an arch leads to a small circular chamber which was possibly added later. This would accord with the attribution to Stackhouse Thompson who is said to have collected the shells and coral from the Great Barrier Reef. The chamber has colonnade supporting a dome encrusted with shells, fossils, coral, polished stones and mirrors, and has a lantern at top, and niches in the walls. Red brick exterior walls at rear. Barbara Jones "Follies and Grottos".
