Description
The Church of St John Baptist is a Grade I listed parish church located on Timberhill. It dates back to the 11th century, featuring long and short work in the east wall, with 15th-century flint construction complemented by stone and brick dressings. The church has slate roofs with small dormers and lead on the aisles, comprising a nave and chancel, along with north and south aisles and a south porch. A north vestry was added in the 19th century. Most windows were renewed or refaced in the 19th century, and the west tower collapsed in 1784.
The church features a three-light Decorated west window and a small bell-turret with a spirelet on the west gable. The nave is three bays wide with three-light Perpendicular windows, and there is a two-storey porch against the west bay, which has a two-centre arched outer doorway with 20th-century glazed doors. Inside, there is a central vaulted statue niche containing a 19th-century statue of St John Baptist, flanked by windows with cusped ogee heads above the door. The church has a crenellated parapet and a single three-light Perpendicular window in the chancel aisle, along with a four-light reticulated east window and three-light Perpendicular windows in the east aisle. The arcades consist of three bays with bulky quatrefoil piers and triple-chamfered arches, and there are single bays for the north and south chancel aisles with four-centre arches. A fine chandelier from around 1500 hangs within the church.
