Description
No. 9, Surrey Street is a former house, later serving as an early office for the Norwich Union insurance company, and now used as offices. It was built in 1764 by Robert Mylne, with later additions by Sir Robert Soane. The building was refaced in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with a pantile roof. Set back from the street, it features small, projecting single-storey wings. The main facade has three storeys with two- and three-storey side extensions. The central door is surrounded by rustication. Sash windows are present throughout, featuring glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches. Two string bands run between the ground and first floors. A modillion cornice sits atop the building, surmounted by a parapet. The roof is hipped. The interior contains fine fireplaces designed by Soane.
