Description

Salthouse Hall is a house dating from the early 17th century, and possibly incorporating an earlier core. It is constructed of brick with black glazed pantiles and originally had seven bays, though the listing now refers to it as having two contiguous wings to the rear, one from the 17th century and one from the 19th.

The south front has coloured brick headers, a moulded platband, a dentil cornice, and gable parapets. A stack is located on the right gable end. Most of the flush sash windows have been replaced, and there are blocked openings in bays three and six on the first floor; the bay six opening contains two fire insurance plaques. A moulded doorcase is situated in bay three, leading to a door with six raised and fielded panels and an oblong light above. The east ground floor gable is raised and constructed of coursed flint with brick dressings, featuring a blocked ground floor window and two inserted first floor windows. An attic window is also present.

To the rear, two wings are attached. A wide wing, dating from the late 19th century and constructed from uncoursed flint with brick dressings, includes sash windows with margin lights (two on the ground floor, one on each of the first and attic floors). A single-storey forward service range is present to the right, continuing the east gable of the main house and the return of the wing. A narrower wing to the right has a steeply pitched roof and brickwork to the right return, which is of coursed flint. This wing contains two large sash windows with margin lights on the first floor and a single sash window in the attic, all with stone wedge lintels incorporating a moulded brick band above.
