Description
The gate piers at the south end of the wall of St Anne's at The College of Clergy, located immediately north along Knight Street and Memorial Square, date from the 17th century or earlier. They are constructed of flint with brick dressings and feature a steep pantile roof with brick coping at the gable ends. The structure is two storeys high and has four windows on the first floor, including two sashes with glazing bars and two later casements with glazing bars. The ground floor has two sashes with glazing bars as well. There are many blocked window and door openings. A central early 19th-century moulded architrave doorcase with an entablature and a deep cornice is present. The building has brick chimney stacks at the ends and off centre. The wall running along Knight Street and Memorial Square is likely from the 18th century but has been repaired in the 19th century, made of flint and brick with earlier lower courses and brick coping. The 19th-century square red brick piers at the south end are about 9 feet high and follow the curve of the road. An attached 19th-century wrought iron lamp bracket is also present.
