Description
The Cottage Annexe adjoining No 2 to the north-east, now part of The Knight's Gate Hotel and Restaurant, is a building that dates back to the 17th century. Originally a range of cottages, it features painted flint with brick dressings and openings, some of which are blocked with brick. The south end has been faced in early 19th-century painted brick. The building has pantile roofs with gabled ends, and the central section has a steep pitch. It stands two storeys high and has three widely spaced windows, all of which are modern wide three-light metal frame casements with glazing bars, except for one small horizontal pivot window from the early to mid-19th century on the ground floor to the left.
At the rear, there is a wing that also dates to the 17th century, constructed of painted flint and brick, with a renewed steep pantile roof and gabled ends. This wing is one storey with an attic and features two modern casements and two small dormers with sloping roofs and glazing bars. Inside, the building has chamfered beams and exposed joists.
The Cottage Annexe itself, also from the 17th century, is made of painted flint and has a steep pantile roof with coped gable ends. It is one storey with an attic and has three windows, including a 19th-century horizontal pivot window with glazing bars and casements. The central entrance has an early boarded door, and there are two dormers with sloping roofs and two-light casements. Each end of the building has a brick chimney stack, with a large external stack at the west end. The interior continues the theme of chamfered beams and exposed joists.
