Description

Old Farm Cottage is a 17th-century house constructed of flint with brick dressings and a pantile roof. It consists of three cells built in three phases and is 1½ storeys high, featuring gable parapets. The north facade facing the road has an off-centre axial stack on the left with a rebuilt shaft, and an internal stack on the right gable end. There is a dentil cornice and vertical brick joins between the left and centre, and centre and right cells. The rectangular openings have renewed windows. The older left-hand cell is made of coursed broken flint with a brick-capped plinth and a higher roof ridge, featuring a single opening to the first floor. The central and right-hand cells are made of coursed whole flint, with the central cell having a central doorway, a window to the left, a blocked doorway to the right, and two openings to the first floor, one of which is inserted. The right cell has a forward single-storey addition that was extended in 1986. The east gable has lozenge brick work at the apex and three central openings that have been renewed or inserted. The south facade at the rear is made of coursed whole flint, with a dentil cornice and part vertical brick joins between the cells, featuring scattered rectangular windows. The third cell to the east has a lobby entrance, and the facade is recessed on the right side, with both angles having quoins of 17th-century brick. Inside, the west cell has bar stopped ovolo moulded beams and large internal stacks. The building was undergoing extensive renovation at the time of the resurvey, so the interior was not fully inspected.
