Description
The Subsidiary Garden Wall to Waxham Hall is a garden wall dating from around 1570, with later alterations in the 19th and late 20th centuries. It is constructed from whole flints, brick, and some ashlar. The wall runs southwest from the house and then returns northwest, interrupted by a gate. The section of the wall between the gate and the house was rebuilt in the late 20th century following a collapse.
The remaining part of the wall features rounded ashlar coping. In the angle of the return, there are high relief carvings made of cement applied over brick and flint rubble from the mid-19th century. These carvings depict stylised foliage and rocks, with grotesque figures either standing or sitting on rocks, playing musical instruments such as a tambourine and a horn. This design appears to be a rustic interpretation of Aztec-style carvings that were being published in engraved form at the time. To the north, there is an additional scene in the same style, showing three figures resembling North American Indians, but with Mexican Indian features, gesticulating in a stylised forest. The central figure aims a bow and arrow at a coiled, hissing serpent. Flanking each scene are two grotesque head corbels, making a total of six.
