Description
Jetty Cliff and Bastion, including sloping pedestrian pathways, is a cliff retaining wall and pathways built between 1894 and 1895 by J.C. Melliss of London for the Cromer Protection Commissioners. The structure features two sloping paths that lead from the top at the east and west ends of the massive cliff retaining wall down to a small platform about a third of the way down the cliff. From this platform, a western path continues down to meet the promenade just west of the pier forecourt, while the eastern path slopes down to about two-thirds of the way down the cliff, levels out, reverses direction, and angles down to the promenade near the pier. The cliff wall is faced with carefully laid coursed flint cobbles, and the edges of the paths have Staffordshire blue clay kerbs and iron railings.
Historically, this structure was part of a project aimed at improving access to the promenade and jetty from the cliff top. The cliff wall was extended to create more space in front of the Hotel de Paris, which was also enlarged and given a new facade during this period. This work was part of a larger initiative to enhance sea defenses and construct a pier to replace the jetty. In 1901, Douglass and Arnott reinforced the cliff wall by adding a large bastion in the center. This impressive wall and its slopes are significant components of a historic group of buildings and structures that includes the pier, the Hotel de Paris, and the sea wall defenses and promenade.
