Description
The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is a parish church with Norman and Early English elements, dating from the 11th and 13th centuries. It was largely rebuilt in 1898 by H.J. Green, the Diocesan architect for Norwich, with consulting from Sir Reginald Blomfield, an architect known for his work on the Sandringham Estate. The church is constructed from flint and carstone rubble with freestone dressings, featuring plain-tiled roofs for the nave and chancel, and lead roofs for the south aisle. The nave includes a south aisle and a south porch, along with a chancel. The external details, all from 1898, exhibit a High Victorian style, particularly evident in the tracery of the west window and the bell cote.
Inside, the church has a two-bay south arcade with a central octagonal pier from the 13th century or later, flanked by two half-octagonal respond piers with moulded bases, which have been renewed higher up. The nave features a closely set scissor-braced roof, while the chancel is boarded. The floors are tessellated. The Norman stone font has a base plinth and a shaft supported by four piers with bases and capitals, leading to a square bowl with slightly bowed sides, adorned with angle piers, bases, and capitals. Each side of the bowl features a lion-mask, interlace, and inhabited scrolls. A brass memorial to Sir Thomas Shernborne and his wife, depicting a knight in armor and his lady, is mounted on the north wall. The pulpit dates from 1898, the pews from 1919, and the east window is stained glass from 1924.
