Description

Two houses, 3 and 3A King's Staithe Square, date to the late 18th century, although incorporating an earlier core. The properties are constructed of red brick with a slate roof. Number 3 is the larger of the two, comprising five bays, and north of Number 3A. A panelled door is located to the right of Number 3’s facade, set within a plain pilaster doorcase, above which is an overlight with decorative glazing. To the left of the door are three sash windows with glazing bars and gauged skewback arches; a fourth window is blind. The first floor is lit by five sash windows with similar detailing, although their exposed boxes suggest an origin around 1735, while the glazing itself is of the late 18th century. A moulded timber eaves cornice runs along both houses. The gabled roof has two dormers over Number 3 and a third over Number 3A, each containing sash windows with glazing bars; the window in the Number 3A dormer was replaced in the late 20th century. Number 3A has a late 20th century door situated to the right of its three-bay facade. Two plate-glass sashes are present on the ground floor and three similar windows on the first floor. A chimney stack is visible on the north side of Number 3, on the rear roof slope.
