Description

The barns at Castle Farm, located approximately 150 metres south of the Church of St. Laurence, date from the 18th century, with one barn believed to be dated 1740. They are constructed from a variety of local stone, including reused Barnack limestone from the nearby castle, and feature pantiles and gable parapets.

The barns share a roof and each consists of three sections with central doorways, facing north. The older barn on the left has limestone dressings and walls made of limestone, carstone, Sandringham sandstone, flint, and reused 17th-century brick, with eaves courses of brick in English bond. Its left gable end is built of coursed brick, limestone, carstone, sandstone, and brick, with a gable above the eaves in dressed limestone. The rear wall is constructed in English bond brick.

The later barn on the right features brick dressings, a plinth of dressed limestone, and a brick dentil cornice, with walls made of galletted coursed carstone blocks. The right gable is composed of limestone and carstone rubble, with three openings in the centre and a doorway to the right, all under flat arches. There is a lean-to on the right made with some dressed limestone and limestone quoins. The rear includes a continuous outshut to the later barn and to the left section of the earlier barn, built in brick and covered with pantiles, which is of no special interest.

Attached to the north facade of the later barn are sheds and storehouses that are also of no special interest. Inside, the division between the two barns is made of carstone rubble, but the roof was sealed and not inspected during the survey.
