Description

Nos. 20 and 21 on Low Road are a pair of cottages dating from the 17th century. They are constructed from carstone with brick dressings and feature pantiles. The cottages are designed with two cells and a chimney bay at each end, both of which have lean-tos. They stand one and a half storeys tall and have end internal stacks, each topped with a pair of lozenge-shaped shafts.

The left cell, No. 20, has galletted brick and carstone eaves courses on its chimney bay. The right cell, No. 21, features 17th-century brick quoins on the right side and a vertical joint of 17th-century brick on the ground floor to the left. The chimney bay here is made of brick and galletted carstone. Each cell has one double casement window on the ground floor and two double casements on the first floor, all with glazing bars and chamfered brick surrounds, although the windows in the left cell have been renewed. Each cell also has a boarded door leading to adjacent doorways, with 19th-century coped canopies above.

The left lean-to, made of carstone, is continuous with the facade, while the right lean-to, constructed from brick and carstone, is set back with the stack against the gable of the right cell. Inside the right cell, No. 21, the principal beams feature quarter moulding and ogee run-out stops, with some joists also having quarter moulding. There is a staircase located at the front of the enclosed stack.
