Description
Castle Farmhouse, built around 1740, is located approximately 150 meters northwest of Castle Rising. This farmhouse features galletted blocks of carstone with brick dressings and a pantile roof, characterized by gable parapets. It is a double-depth structure with three bays, two storeys, and an attic, and has gable end stacks. The symmetrical principal facade includes a central doorway with a fluted doorcase and canopy, panelled reveals, and a half-glazed door with a rectangular light above that has glazing bars. The ground and first floors of bays one and three have three-light casements, while there is a two-light casement above the door.
The front and rear of the house have four wooden beams under the eaves, which are attached to iron ties running through the house. The left gable is made of ungalletted carstone rubble and features a central external stack for both the ground and first floors, with a central two-light casement in the attic. The ground floor has two-light casements, with two to the left and one to the right of the stack, while the first floor has one to the far right and one to the far left. The right gable consists of coursed galletted carstone blocks and is not raised; it has an attached boiler house in the center, a blocked window to the left, and an inserted window to the right, with a central two-light casement in the attic and a chimney shaft above.
The rear of the farmhouse has altered openings, featuring a central three-light casement on the ground floor, a tall window, and a blocked doorway to the right, with a doorway to the left encased by a late 20th-century gabled porch made of brick and part glazed. The first floor has three two-light casements, with two small square openings inserted between them.
Inside, the farmhouse has long tie beams with quarter mouldings spanning the double width of the house, and a curved open string staircase at the center front with a mahogany wreathed handrail. There is a wide doorway between the front and rear of the first floor, which includes a shallow segmental fanlight. The large central stack has had its shaft removed. This house is situated on the site of a 15th-century lodge associated with the castle.
