Description
The Northern Gateway to the Carmelite Precinct, located in King's Lynn, is a 15th-century structure that serves as the entrance to the precinct of the Carmelite Friary. It is built of brick with ashlar dressings and features a plain tile roof. The north side of the gateway is two storeys high, although the interior does not reflect this height. It has a stilted stone arch with a double hollow-chamfered design and a hood on labels. The stone quoins add to its robustness, and there is a string course at the first floor level, which supports three ashlar niches. These niches have wave-moulded arches, with the central niche raised higher on a pedestal and topped with a cusped ogee head. The parapet completes the north side's architectural detail. In contrast, the south side is more straightforward, featuring a hollow-chamfered stilted arch beneath a sloping plain tiled roof.
