Description

The Grove is a farmhouse, largely dating from the late 16th century, with significant remodelling and additions in the 18th century. It is a double-pile building constructed of brick, with some areas colourwashed and others pebbledashed. The roofs are covered with black-glazed pantiles, with hipped and gabled sections and parapets to the end bays. The main south facade has six bays, with the central two bays recessed. The building is two storeys high with attic space. The central doorway has side-lights, fluted pilasters and a decorative fanlight, although it is now set within a later flat-roofed porch. Sash windows with glazing bars are prominent. On the east facade are two sets of glazed doors, one with side-lights and fluted pilasters supporting a canopy. An earlier range to the north has casement windows, some with leaded glazing, including a three-light casement with a hood mould at first floor level. A central chimney stack features clustered octagonal brick shafts, and there is a parapetted gable to the west. A lower two-storey double-gabled extension projects to the north, with a brick stack on its east side and a moulded wooden eaves cornice. The interior includes a moulded 16th-century door frame in the dining room, and a 16th-century side-purlin roof over the earlier range and wings.
