Description
Church Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with significant additions from the 18th century. The building features a rendered timber frame that is faced in brick at the front and has a thatched roof. It was originally designed with a lobby-entrance type plan and has two storeys with an attic. The late 18th-century facade consists of five bays, each with sash windows that have glazing bars and are set beneath skewback arches. The central entrance is a raised and fielded panelled door, which is partly glazed and has a very simple doorcase.
The house has a central axial stack with four interconnecting angled shafts that have moulded brick decoration at the joints. The southernmost bay and gable end are likely from the early 18th century, featuring English bond brickwork, tumbling-in, and a plain platband. There are later lean-tos at the rear and three dormers with modern windows. An early 18th-century sash window in the kitchen has wide glazing bars. Inside, there is an original winding stair located on the rear side of the stack, along with a barrel-vaulted passage that runs through the stack.
Notably, there is a fine early 18th-century half-turn well stair with corner landings in the southernmost bay, which includes turned attenuated vase balusters, a wide handrail, shaped tread ends, and a panelled dado. The interior also features several raised and fielded panelled doors and an early 18th-century bolection moulded fireplace. The original timbers display ogee and stepped chamfer stops. The building has group value with Park Farmhouse.
