Description
Guntons Farmhouse is a former manor house dating from the late 16th century and later. It features a timber frame with brick gable ends and a replacement brick facade, topped with pantile roofs. The building is two storeys high with an attic. The 18th-century symmetrical facade has three bays on the ground floor and four bays on the first floor, showcasing four surviving three-light mullion and transom casement windows beneath skewback arches. There are two 20th-century windows in original openings and a central panelled door with a pedimented doorcase. A dentil cornice adds to the architectural detail. The gable ends are constructed in English bond with internal stacks, and there are some surviving 16th-century hollow-chamfered mullion windows with two to four lights. The rear wall features a central timber-framed stair outshut with a Victorian triangular-headed window, along with a later lean-to outshut and some 20th-century brick facing.
Inside, the timber frame is made of heavy scantling and is of high quality. A dogleg staircase with solid treads leads to the first floor, and there is a newel stair to the attic. The long gallery on the first floor appears to be primary, as arched braces spring from the principal studs rather than from wall posts. The roof features clasped purlins and queen struts with windbracing. The long gallery also contains a painted inscription that is likely from the 16th century.
