Description

Horn Hill Cottage and Shire Cottage are two houses located on Old Shire Lane in Chalfont St. Peter. They were likely built in the early 17th century and have been extended in the 18th and 19th centuries, with alterations made in the 20th century. The original house probably has a timber frame, which has been extended in brick and rendered. The roofs are made of tile and slate.

Horn Hill Cottage was originally two bays and may have had an open hall; it is now one storey with an attic. A two-storey, two-bay house was added to the left. The front of Horn Hill Cottage features two two-light casement windows, a gabled dormer, and another two-light casement where it connects to the later house. There is a single light window in the right gable end. The left end stack, which was originally external, has been incorporated into the ridge of Shire Cottage.

The central entrance is set in a reveal beneath a gabled hood supported by cut brackets. There are two-light casement windows flanking the entrance on the ground floor and to the left on the first floor, along with a left end stack. To the right of the original range, there is a one-storey, three-bay 19th-century addition with buttress pilasters and a slate roof that is hipped to the right. At the rear of the original range, there is a lean-to addition that serves as the current entrance and features two gabled dormers. There is also a lean-to at the rear left of the later block. The interior has not been inspected. Shire Cottage is included for its group value.
