Description

The tiled mural by Gyula Bajó is located at the former Co-operative House, which was the commercial premises of the Letchworth, Hitchin and District Co-operative Society, built between 1956 and 1958 and now houses Primark.

The mural consists of 800 vitrified ceramic tiles with coloured enamel glazes, fired at 900 degrees Centigrade. It is situated at the east end of the north elevation, spanning the first and second floors, and measures approximately 8 meters by 6 meters (27 feet by 20 feet). The mural is 25 tiles wide on the Town Square elevation and extends around the Queensway elevation with a line of single tiles.

The design illustrates the "four cornerstones of a balanced economy – Industry, Commerce, Transport and Agriculture." The top-left corner depicts the architecture of the New Town, the top-right corner shows heavy industry and transport, stylized female figures with a spinning wheel and finished products represent textiles and consumer goods, while the bottom half of the mural represents agriculture and the family unit. Beneath the mural, a cantilevered canopy highlights the artwork, supported by pilotis that connect it to the ground and define the canted entrance to the building. A Primark sign was added to the north-east corner, along with electrical signage over the cantilevered canopy in the early 21st century; this signage is not of special interest and is excluded from the listing.
