Description

These red brick almshouses, with occasional grey brick headers and a tiled roof with a brick cornice, stand on Church Lane. They were largely rebuilt in 1809, though they incorporate elements of an earlier almshouse known as “All Christian Souls’ House,” founded in 1501 by Stephen Hellard, the rector of Stevenage. The building is one storey high with attics, and features a plinth. It has four double-light casement windows, one single-light diamond lattice window, and one window with glazing bars beneath a cambered arch. Four gabled dormers are visible. The almshouses, Nos 8 to 14, form a distinct group.
