Description

These are two semi-detached cottages, originally estate cottages built around 1890 for the Childwick Bury Stud estate. They were likely designed in a Domestic Revival style, possibly by Col. R.W.Edis FRIBA, for Sir John Blundell Maple M.P. The cottages are built of red brick with brighter red brick details, including some applied timber framing with roughcast panels on the first floor and in the front gables. They have a plain tile roof with two bands of fish scale tiles on each slope, gables with deep verges and barge boards, and a central brick ridge stack with a brick dentil cornice and ceramic chimney pots.

The cottages are arranged as mirror images, with each cottage within a central lateral range and a projecting cross wing to the front and rear. The front elevation is symmetrical, with a raised band at first floor level marked by quoining in bright red brick. On the first floor of the central range, vertical boards frame roughcast panels. Ground floor entrance doorways, each with a vertical boarded door and a lean-to, tiled roof porch supported on timber posts, are located within the front gable walls of the cross wings. Flanking each doorway are four-light metal casement windows with glazing bars ([3x4 panes in each light] with gothic heads to the top row of panes), set within shallow, segmental brick arches. The central range features two three-light casement windows with similar details. First floor windows in the cross wing gable ends are three-light casements with small diamond panes set in metal glazing bars. The gables of the cross wings have curved braces in the two central panels of the applied timber framing. The rear elevation features one and two-light casements with diamond pane glazing, similar to those at the front. The applied timber framing, casement frames, and projecting window sills are all painted white. The interior has not been inspected.
