Description

This is a mid-17th century timber-frame house pair, originally numbers 40 and 44 Church End in Redbourn. The timber frame is now clad in painted white brick, with a plain tile roof topped by a central chimney stack featuring four joined diagonal shafts on a square base. The house has two storeys and attics, with a long frontage. The first floor has six sliding sash windows with glazing bars in their original openings, the centre two being a pair. There are four similar windows on the ground floor, alongside three plank doors. Two gabled dormers light the attic space. The east gable end incorporates a wall from an earlier building, believed to have been the village hall; this section shows closer-set vertical studwork and 20th-century nogging.
