Description
Nos 8 to 12 Market Place is a building dating from the 15th century. It is part of a larger structure that originally surrounded a courtyard, but only the west range remains in its original form, although some alterations have been made for its current use as a shop. The eastern side was rebuilt in the 17th century, while the rest of the original structure has been lost.
This range is constructed of timber and has two storeys beneath steep tiled roofs, featuring a central cross-gable that overhangs the original gateway, which is now glazed over as part of the shop. The timber framework has been well preserved in most of the interior, and the facade of the gateway shows plaster in-filling. The ground floor has been adapted for a shop front without significantly altering the overall appearance of the building. The upper floor has seven windows, with the northern five being leaded casements and the southern two being late 18th century or early 19th century sashes. There are also two gabled dormers. The front has been recently shortened on the right, resulting in the demolition of much of No 12. All listed buildings in Market Place are part of a group.
