Description
The Church of St Mary is a large parish church built primarily in the 15th century, with a mid-13th century chancel and an early 16th century south chapel. It features north and south aisles of the chapel with arcades of three bays. The church has a two-storey south porch and a west tower that consists of three stages, topped with an embattled parapet and a lead spike. The chancel includes 13th century lancet windows, as well as a piscina and sedilia. Inside, there are impressive 15th century tie beam roofs in the nave and aisles, along with the south chapel, which showcases traceried spandrels and carved angels. Notable fittings include a 13th century font and two altar tombs, one of which is dedicated to Sir Walter and Lady de la Lee, dating from around 1420, featuring two fine brass figures under a canopy. There is also a smaller brass commemorating Robert Newport, who constructed the south chapel, and his wife, dating from around 1518.
