Description

This is a range of houses, now shops with offices and flats above, dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed, with plastered walls, some masonry lining, and an old tiled roof.

The exterior is two storeys and attics. The first floor has four nearly flush-set sash windows; three have glazing bars, and one is plain glazed, all with exposed boxes and architraves. The ground floor has timber arcaded shopfronts to numbers 12-16, rebuilt in 1994, and an 19th-century shopfront to number 12, below the line of a former jetty. The roof features four gabled casement dormers and a square red brick chimney on the ridge between numbers 10 and 12. A similar chimney is located at the rear behind number 14, both topped with buff terracotta pots.

The ground floor interior has been considerably altered and opened out. Number 16 has a long 19th-century outshoot along Maidenhead Yard, constructed from red and yellow brick, featuring three recessed timber sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor, beneath a low-pitched Welsh slated roof. The upper floors and roof were not inspected.
