Description
The West Terrace walls, steps, and seat at Briggens House Hotel were built around 1908 for H C Gibbs. They are made of plum brick with recessed joints in the walls and feature deeply chamfered stone copings. The seat is constructed from stone and moulded stucco, and the area is paved with York stone. The formal lower terrace, located to the south of the house, measures 80 metres long and includes a seat in a recess at the western end at an upper level. There are two flights of seven semicircular brick steps that project southward, one near each end, flanked by low square brick piers with stone capping, all set within a long brick retaining wall that also has similar stone capping. The seat is designed in a Florentine style, featuring a circular central achievement in the back with the motto 'Tenax roposite'. This structure is likely part of the same terraced design as the Portland stone upper terrace and tank attached to the house. It serves as an impressive architectural feature that is essential to the setting of the house.
