Description

The barn at Thorley Hall, located 25 metres southwest of the house, dates back to the 16th century. It is a tall, five-bay structure that is timber-framed and weatherboarded, topped with a steep old tile roof. The barn features a low red brick sill wall and has a half-hipped roof with a projecting gabled porch at the centre of the south side, along with double doors leading to the yard in the middle of the north side.

The corners and sides of the central bay are supported by heavy chamfered bay posts with a pronounced step at the jowl, and tension braces extend down to a mid-height tenoned rail. Long curved braces provide support for the tie beams, and the barn has a chamfered wall plate. The roof is constructed with clasped purlins that do not have collars, and heavy angled queen struts support the purlins at the junction with the principal rafter. Curved wind braces are also present.

Most of the rafters, wall studs, and the brick sill appear to be original, along with the main frame of the barn. It is depicted in a sketch on the estate plan from 1672/3 and in a drawing of Thorley Hall by Buckler around 1832, both of which are held in the Hampshire Record Office. The barn is particularly significant for the preservation of much of its original fabric.
