Description
The aisled cattleshed at Briggens Home Farm, built in the late 19th century, is a large square building made of grey brick. It features a wide entrance in the gable facing south and has a low-pitched gabled roof that is now covered with corrugated asbestos. The structure has vertical boarding with an arched, decorated lower edge over the entrance. Inside, it consists of a 6-bay timber framework with an open nave and wide aisles, each bay containing a 2-light window. The arcade posts have rebates designed to hold rails that can close off each bay. There is a central circular window in the north gable above larger, possibly modern, windows. The roof structure includes a wide span king post with inclined struts supporting the purlin of the aisle roof. This unusual and spacious cattleshed has seen little alteration and is of particular interest as it represents the late 19th-century shift in farming practices in the area, focusing on fattening cattle in enclosed yards with open-fronted sheds for shelter. The integration of covered yards and shelter sheds into a single building is exemplified here. This structure is part of the historic farm group at Briggens Home Farm.
