Description
The drinking fountain, located on Old Cross in Hertford, was built in 1890 using fragments from the former Church of St Mary the Less, which was discovered on the site during the library's construction in 1880. The church dates back to before 1210 and was destroyed before 1552.
The fountain is made of clunch stone and features a base with a small pointed arch above a drainage recess, which has crude roll mouldings. It includes a projecting band with a central stoup and a tablet with a central tap. Above this is a rebuilt 13th-century lancet window adorned with colonnettes topped with bell caps, a roll-moulded outer arch, and an inner reveal decorated with continuous dog tooth ornament and chamfered jambs.
A tablet at the base of the lancet opening commemorates the history of the fountain, which was erected through public subscription.
