Description

The stables at Bayfordbury, located 220 meters to the west-southwest of the mansion, were built around 1812 for William Baker II MP, likely designed by Francis Aldhouse. The structure features white brick, which appears in shades of salmon and yellow, along with uncoursed knapped flint panels in the screen wall and a low-pitched hipped roof covered with graduated slates.

The stables are arranged around a square stone-paved courtyard, with two-storey buildings on the north, east, and south sides, and a two-meter-high wall on the west side. This wall is punctuated by six wide flint-panelled piers topped with stone copings, and there is a wrought iron gate in a narrow central entrance between two of the piers. The east range includes an entrance carriageway at the north, four pairs of double doors set in segmental arched recesses for coach and carriage houses, and a round-arched entrance leading to the stairway for the upper floor. The first floor features a central circular blind recess and three recessed sash windows on each side, each with eight panes. The north and south wings have round-arched recesses with small-paned windows and flush-bead panelled doors leading to stables on the north and stable cottages on the south. The south wing has more typical fenestration for cottages. The formal west front facing the rose garden displays flint panels in the screen wall, a large round-headed recess between corner pilasters at the west ends of the north and south ranges, and false recessed sash windows with eight panes centrally located on the first floor above.
