Description

Prospect House is a house dating from the early 19th century, with extensive additions made in the 20th century. It is located approximately 40 meters north of Castle Street, positioned between No. 69 and the Methodist Church. The building is constructed of brick, which is rendered and colorwashed, and it has a slate roof. The plan is an irregular U shape, featuring the original rectangular house along with significant rear additions on the south side.

The house is two storeys tall with a basement. The north elevation has three bays, with steps leading up to a central doorway set in an arched recess. The doorway has a moulded frame and a round-headed overlight with ornate glazing bars. The door itself is a 20th-century boarded and battened design. There are recessed round-headed sash windows on either side of the door, each with glazing bars, a radial at the head, and arranged in a 3x3 pane configuration. Below these, the basement features a segment-headed window with 3x2 panes. On the first floor, there are three similar sash windows, each with 4x3 panes. The roof is fully hipped with deep eaves, and there is a rendered stack on each side of the roof pitch.

The east elevation shows the original block of red brick with scored pointing and a central stack that rises through the roof. The windows on this side are 20th-century with glazing bars, including a single sash window with 4x4 panes on the ground floor and two 2-light casement windows with 4x2 panes on the first floor.

The west elevation is similar to the east but features a 20th-century red brick lean-to at the south end, which has a 2x4 paned casement window at the north end. The rear wall is partly constructed of brick with flint cobble panels, possibly of 19th-century origin. The north end has a fully glazed doorway with 3x6 panes, and on the first floor, there is one single-light and one 2-light casement window.

The south elevation's ground floor is obscured by a 20th-century lean-to conservatory on the east side and a long room with a three-canted bay window on the west side. The first floor of the original house features three segment-headed windows with glazing bars, each with 3x4 panes.
