Description
Two houses, dating back to the 16th century with an early 19th-century reconstruction and 20th-century refurbishment. They have a timber-frame structure with plaster and a peg-tiled roof. The houses are arranged in an L-shape to the street, with two joined 20th-century additions. They are two storeys high, with attics and a cellar. The front, north elevation has a two-window, two-door arrangement, with doors in the centre. Decorative 20th-century pargeting panels are present; at No.28, the design incorporates a fan combed pattern, while at No.26, it features applied details of fleur-de-lys, lions' heads, and rosettes, along with a bishop within a gabled niche. No.26 has a 20th-century boarded door with decorative hinges, and a 20th-century four-light casement window with leaded panes to its side, with a similar window above. No.28 has a six-panel door, the upper two panels glazed and the lower panels fielded, alongside a small, three-light cant bay window supported by a central bracket, with glazing bars in a pattern of 5x3 panes. The first floor has a 19th-century two-light sliding sash window with glazing bars in a pattern of 6x3 panes. The rear, south elevation has all 20th-century detailing. No.26 has a full-width clay-tiled lean-to, while No.28 has a partial ground-floor lean-to, plain doors and a two-light casement window. The first floor has one single and one two-light casement window, and two roof lights. Inside No.26, there is extensive imitation timber framing, but the original 16th-century outer members remain, revealing jowled posts, tie-beams, and rails of the house unit. A cellar is also present. No.28 features post-medieval slender ceiling joists.
