Description

Wicken House, known as the Old Rectory, is an 1856 house, likely designed by John Hanson Sperling. It comprises a complex plan formed of two parallel gabled blocks with a return ‘cross wing’ at the eastern end. A single-storey gabled block and stair tower are located on the west front, which serves as the entrance.

The south front, overlooking the garden, features three dormers, a gabled projecting block to the east, and a multi-angular hipped roofed projection to the west end. The windows are a mix of double-hung sashes with glazing bars and casements. Decorative barge boards adorn the gables. Numerous ‘Elizabethan’ style shaft stacks, which are clustered, are a prominent feature. The building is constructed of red and gault brick.
