Description
Chestnut Cottage is a cottage that was originally a pair of cottages, built around 1750. It was converted into a single cottage in the 1950s and extended at the rear in the 1970s. The building is timber-framed and rendered, featuring a pantiled roof and a central brick chimneystack. It has two storeys with a front elevation that includes two upper windows and four lower windows, all of which are casement windows. The upper windows are mid-19th century casements, while the ground floor windows are early 19th century cast iron casements with leaded lights. A 20th-century doorcase is located on the extreme right, replacing the original doorcases that were central to each cottage.
The rear elevation includes a tiled lean-to on the ground floor. Inside, the cottage has a frame with a spine beam that has a chamfer and run-out stops. The fireplaces are from the 20th century, but there may be an open fireplace hidden behind them. Each ground floor room features a boarded cupboard, plank doors, and two original winder staircases, although one has been removed.
