Description

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a parish church that dates back to the 12th century, with alterations and extensions from the 13th, 14th, and 16th centuries, and some restoration work in the 19th century. It is constructed of flint rubble and red brick, featuring limestone dressings, and has roofs made of slate, lead, and tile.

The nave, which is from the 12th century, includes two 14th-century windows and a south arcade that has been partly rebuilt. The west window was added in the 19th century. The chancel, dating from the 13th century, has its original east window reset, along with a 17th-century north window and a 13th-century south window and doorway. The chancel arch is semi-circular and from the 12th century.

An early 14th-century south aisle features a 16th-century east window and a restored 14th-century south window. The south doorway has a segmental arch from the 14th century. The southwest tower is three stages high, with an embattled parapet and brick buttresses, containing a 14th-century east door and a 14th-century west window, with 16th-century windows in the upper stages. A 19th-century south porch has been added.

The nave roof consists of seven cants of uncertain date, but tie beams were added in the 14th century. Remains of 12th-century timber can be seen in the west gable. The chancel roof is also of seven cants and dates from the 14th century. Inside, there is a 15th-century octagonal font, some fragments of 13th and 14th-century glass, and a 13th-century piscina.
